Pattaya welcomes tennis stars

PTT Pattaya Open upgrades following its inclusion in a new series.

A popular event for tennis lovers, the PTT Pattaya Open, will be held in Pattaya from 7 to 15 February.

Considered on of the longest running tournaments on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour for professional women tennis players, the 2009 tournament will be held at Dusit Thani Hotel in Pattaya from 7 to15 February, with the qualifying rounds on 7 to 9 February. The main draw starts from 9 February running through to the finals on 15 February. Main matches will start from 1500 daily.

This yearâ€'s event opens a new chapter in the history of the tournament, due to changes introduced by the Womenâ€'s Tennis Association. It resulted in an upgrade of the tournament following its inclusion in a newly created international series with prize money raised to a minimum of US$220,000.

Five of the world's top 20 women tennis stars -- Vera Zvonareva, Nadia Petrova, Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka and Dominika Cibulkova -- will join along with Thai tennis players such as Tammy Tamarine Tanasugarn and Nok Noppawan Lertcheewakarn.

The event draws both local and international fans and has gone a long way to putting Pattaya on the map as a tennis destination.

Ticket prices are Bt200 for 7 to 8 February, Bt300, Bt500 and Bt800 for 9 to12 February and Bt300, Bt500, Bt800 and Bt1,000 for 13 to 15 February. Same price as 2008.

The PTT Pattaya Open is supported by PTT Public, Pattaya City, Sports Authority of Thailand, Chonburi Provincial Administration, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Dusit Thani Pattaya, Wilson, Yonex, the Telephone Organisation of Thailand, Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital and J C Ferrero Equelite.

It was first held in 1991 and many famous players have graced the courts at the Dusit Thani, Pattaya including Anna Kournikova, Martina Hingis, Conchita Martinez and Patty Schnyder.

Several improvements are being carried out to the venue including the construction of a fourth court at the Dusit Thani, Pattaya, improvements in the stadium capacity, lighting and an expansion of the facilities for players, press and officials. Practice courts at the Montien Hotel will also be upgraded to the new tournament standards.
